Student Engagement

MTCC's service-learning contacts are staff and faculty members at MTCC member institutions who serve as local coordinators for the Campus Corps AmeriCorps program. These coordinators support students and faculty members from numerous academic disciplines.
Contact Campus Corps program staff, or the contact person at your campus about getting involved on your campus and in your community.

MTCC Student Fellowships
Built on the model of MTCC's successful Faculty Fellowship Program, Student Fellowships provided students with the opportunity to enhance curricular education with hands-on community service work and training in citizenship. The Student Fellows incorporated community service into their academic programs by working closely with a campus sponsor and a community-based organization, performing public service specific to the Student Fellow's academic field, and carrying out a quality collaborative project with the community organization.
To obtain more information about the Student Fellows program, please contact Dean McGovern
Dannette Fadness , a student at the University of Great Falls, worked closely with a new nonprofit organization, AGAPE, to assist with establishing a counseling program for youth. Dannette worked with youth 16 and older who are entering an independent living situation for the first time. Dannette provided support and resources for a successful transition.
Aaron Matthews , a student at the University of Great Falls, worked with a fledging program entitled Back-A-Child. The program provides new school clothes and other school supplies to children, many of whom have never owned new school clothes. These students are not served by any other state agency, so Back-A-Child provides invaluable services. Aaron put his skills to use designing a new database and website for the organization. Aaron also instructed members of the Back-A-Child how to use the website and the database.
Randy Bain , a student from Flathead Valley Community College, collaborated with Flathead C.A.R.E. and Safe and Drug Free Schools. Randy acted as a positive role model, teaching youth about drug prevention techniques, and conflict resolution and leadership skills. He partnered with the organization to plan programs for youth clubs and camps. Randy also helped develop curriculum material for camp participants and coordinated in-school special events and other out-of-school activities.
Francis Smart , an English major at Montana State University-Bozeman, worked with a local nonprofit organization, Youth Reaching Out to refine their materials and create user-friendly booklets that inspire adult and youth to engage in community-service projects. He had the chance to improve his technical writing skills and learned how to design and produce professional service-teaching guides.
Chrissie McMullen, an Environmental Studies graduate student at The University of Montana, partnered with the Missoula Urban Demonstration Project (M.U.D.) in Missoula. Chrissie taught after-school classes on bioregional mapping for at-risk middle school students. The class reconnected students with the natural world. Chrissie also developed curriculum and implemented evaluations as well as serving as a mentor for other volunteers at M.U.D.
Sheila Flowers, a student at Flathead Valley Community College worked with the Flathead Literacy Program to establish tutoring programs for Russian immigrants in the area. She initiated, monitored, tutored in, and evaluated a literacy program.
